August 19, 2012

Greetings from the Bluff Park Back Porch:

The Family fled to the mountains of SW NC for a week long vacation.  Therefore, I missed last weeks Guess.

Last week 1.28 inches of rain fell on BP2.

This Week:  It looks like a 60% chance of rain through Monday.  And, then it is forecast to be sunny and clear.  Typical Labor Day weekend weather, it looks like with scattered showers and storms.

Elemental Mineral Guest:

Thanks to Dennis Lathem who guessed Sodium as the element of the week.

Our elemental guess this week has an atomic number of 12.
–    It is an alkaline earth metal and is the fourth most common element on earth.
–    Commercially, the chief use for the metal is as an alloying agent to make aluminium alloys,
–    It is essential for all plant and animal life on earth.
–    It is used used to make light weight structural metal,
–    The second application field is electronic devices. Because of low weight, good mechanical and electrical properties, it is widely used for manufacturing of mobile phones, laptop and tablet computers.[16], cameras, and other electronic components.
–    And many niche uses and compounds.
–    Including a very popular laxative.

What is it?  M _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

Although magnesium is found in over 60 minerals, only dolomite, magnesite, brucite, carnallite, talc, and olivine are of commercial importance.
