Greetings from the Bluff Park Back Porch:

Last week 0.07 inches of rain fell on BP2.

This Week:  All eyes are watching the impact of  Hurricane Issac on Alabama.  Stay tuned to your local source of weather for details with Issac.  It is too early for a specific forecast, therefore See NOAA Tropical Weather and ABC3340 Web Site below.

Elemental Mineral Guest:

Thanks to Jochen Flosser and Pat Smith-MOM, who guessed magnesium as the element of the week.

Our elemental guess this week has an atomic number of 13.
–    It is a silvery white metal and is the third most common element on earth.
–    Commercially, the chief use for the metal is as an alloying agent to make aluminum alloys,
–    It is found combined with over 270 different minerals.
–    It is used to be as rare as rubies until Mr. Hall found a better and much cheaper way to produce it.  We use it today for our soda cans.
–    It uses include transportation, packaging, construction, household items, street lighting poles, consumer electronics, power distribution, paint, solid rocket fuel, and many more items to improve our lives.

What is it?  A _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _.

Aluminum  is the elemental guest this week.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium

The main source of aluminum is the ore bauxite (AlOx(OH)3–2x).  It also occurs in the minerals beryl, cryolite, garnet, spinel and turquoise. Impurities in Al2O3, such as chromium or iron yield the gemstones ruby and sapphire, respectively.
