June 16, 2013 Weekly Weather and Mineral Guess

June 16, 2013

  Happy Father’s Day

Greetings from the Bluff Park Back Porch:

For the previous week, 1.7 inches of rain fell on BP2 .  The weekly high was 92 and the weekly low was 65.

Metro Birmingham Forecast for the New Week:

–     80% Chance of Showers and Thunderstorms for Sunday through Saturday with the best rainfall on Tuesday (~0.85″).  Total rainfall guesstimate for the week is 2.2 inches.  If your yard just happens to be in the way of this rainfall, you may not have to water the plants and yard this week???  But, remember, for this time of year with these summer type showers, it may rain 2.2 inches on your neighbor’s yard and 0.0″ on your yard.  Now, I have hedged my bets?
–     Weekly forecast high Is 89 and a low of 70.

Elemental Mineral Guest:

Our elemental guest this week is a chemical element with symbol Pd and atomic number 46.

–     Pd is rare.
–     Pd is soft silvery-white metal
–     Over half of the supply of Pd and its congener platinum goes into catalytic converters, which convert up to 90% of harmful gases from auto exhaust into less-harmful substances.
–     Pd is also used in electronics, dentistry, medicine, hydrogen purification, chemical applications, groundwater treatment, photography, and jewelry.

What is it? P _ _ _ _ d _ _ _.

Interactive Periodic Table

Palladium is our elemental guest this week.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palladium

Palladium, platinum, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium form a group of elements referred to as the platinum group metals (PGMs).

Naturally occurring rhodium is usually found as the free metal, alloyed with similar metals such as Platinum and Palladium, and rarely as a chemical compound in minerals such as bowieite and rhodplumsite.

Ore deposits of palladium and other PGMs are rare, and the most extensive deposits have been found in the norite belt of the Bushveld Igneous Complex covering the Transvaal Basin in South Africa, the Stillwater Complex in Montana, United States, the Thunder Bay District of Ontario, Canada, and the Norilsk Complex in Russia. Recycling is also a source of palladium, mostly from scrapped catalytic converters. The numerous applications and limited supply sources of palladium result in the metal attracting considerable investment interest.
