Elemental Mineral Guest:

(We are getting close to the bottom of the Periodic Chart Barrel, Just 1-more element to go)
>    [Special Colorful Gemstones from my “Rings and Things” file = let me know what color you want to start with.}

Our elemental guest this week has the symbol Th and atomic number 90.

–    “Pure Th is a silvery-white metal”
    Th is used in aircraft engines, rockets, gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW),
    Th compounds were used in mantles of portable gas lights, including natural gas lamps, oil lamps and camping lights.  It use is being phased out due to public concerns with radioactivity levels.
    Th nuclear reactors are being developed to provide electric power since due to their lower radioactivity levels and less dangerous by-products.
     Virtually all Th is found as Th-232, which undergoes alpha decay with a half-life of about 14.05 billion years.  Th is used for age dating rocks and minerals.

What is it?   T h _ _ _ _ _ .
