June 28, 2015
tags:
Greetings from the Bluff Park Back Porch, way up yonder on Shades Mountain (1,109′) in Alabama:

We have 10 individual guest minerals for the coming weeks.

The  Hardness  of a mineral defines how much it can resist scratching.

Hardness of 10 is our final guest.  It scratches all other minerals and the girls like them in any color.

Our mineral guest this week is D _ _ _ _ _ _ .

It  is renowned as a material with superlative physical qualities, most of which originate from the strong covalent bonding between its atoms.”  Wikipedia
Pure Carbon

Minerals and Rocks – The Good Life from the Ground

“If it ain’t grown, it has to be mined”

Here we are at the end of this series, new or fresh dirt to plow next week.  Any suggestions?  Minerals, rocks, gems, geologic landscapes, volcanoes, mines of all kinds, geologic parks, and the list goes on.

When I started this quest on mineral hardness, I though that I would list all 10 minerals with hardness from 1-Talc to 10-diamond.  As always, the devil is in the details.  With so many pretty pictures and so many industrial uses.  I thought that I would combine the two for each mineral.
Diamond Images:

Mohs hardness Mineral Chemical formula
1-Softest,Talc Mg3Si4O10(OH)2
2-Gypsum CaSO4·2H2O
3-Calcite CaCO3
4 Fluorite CaF2
5 Apatite Ca5(PO4)3(OH,Cl,F)
6 Orthoclase KAlSi3O8
7 Quartz SiO2
8 Topaz Al2SiO4(OH,F)2
9 Corundum Al2O3
10-Hardest. Diamond C
You can look up each mineral by Right Clicking with the Mouse on the Mineral Name.
….your fingernail has a hardness of 2.5,
….a penny has a hardness of about 3.5,
….glass and a steel nail have nearly equal hardnesses of 5.5 and
….a streak plate (tile) has a hardness of 6.5.
