January 3, 2016 Weekly Weather and Geology Guess

January 3, 2016
Greetings from the Bluff Park Back Porch, way up yonder on Shades Mountain (1,109′) in Alabama:

Needless to say, there is no easy way to geologically dissect North America.
At any rate we will geologically wander across North America as best that I can stumble across the outcrop.  (See below for discussion)
The next big and new words are M _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _    R _ _ _   S _ _ _ _ _ .  (MRS)  Your good if you can guess this or one of those Geologic PhDs???
Enjoy the discussion and please throw you 2 cents or quarter’s worth of comments and questions.

                                                        Topic for The Week
1.3  Midcontinent Rift System (MRS)
To put it very simply for my simple mind:
“This 1,200 mile long tear or rift or split in the Canadian Shield that formed during the Precambrian, about 1.1 billion years ago. The rift failed, leaving behind thick layers of rock that are exposed in its northern reaches, but buried beneath later sedimentary formations along most of its western and eastern arms.”
Underneath Lake Superior the upwelling (“Hot Spot”) of basalt was up to 20,000 ft) in thickness.
It almost became an Ocean.  “The Midcontinent Rift is the deepest closed or healed rift yet discovered; no known deeper rift ever failed to become an ocean.[7] ”
“Lake Superior occupies a basin created by the rift.[4] Near the lake, rocks produced by the rift can be found on the surface in the Keweenaw Peninsula of Upper Michigan, northwest Wisconsin,[9] and on the North Shore of the lake in Minnesota and Ontario.[2]”
“The Michigan Copper Country in the Upper Peninsula and Isle Royale contains major native copper deposits with some nickel.”

Geologic Trivia:  “The Proterozoic Nonesuch Shale formation in the Keweenawan Rift contains enough organic carbon (greater than 0.5%) to be considered a potential source rock for petroleum. Oil identified as Precambrian has been found seeping out of the Nonesuch Shale in the White Pine mine in Michigan.[17]
>    OK?, what type of wee beasties produced the carbon???
*     Why is all of this devilish details important = Natural Resources that consumers and countries pay good money for = $$$$$    Those that can unlock it will be rewarded.
Note:  Even today, people are still poking hole in the ground in MRS trying to knock a home run.
To be continued next week as we push deeper into The North American Craton.  R
