May 29, 2016 Weekly Geology Guess, The Alabama Coastal Plain

May 29, 2016
Greetings from the Bluff Park   Porch, way up yonder on Shades Mountain (1,109′) in Alabama:
My discussion on Alabama Geology will now resume again with the Alabama Coastal Plain

Alabama Coastal Plain
(East Gulf Coastal Plain Physiographic Section)

East Gulf Coastal Plain:  The broad, flat coastal plain stretches across the southern portion of the state, extending north from the Gulf coast to the fall line near Montgomery, Alabama.”
The East Gulf Coastal Plain section is an area of Mesozoic and Cenozoic sediments that occupies the southern part of the state and curves northwesterly up into Lauderdale County, where generally unconsolidated sediments overlap rocks of the Highland Rim, Cumberland Plateau, Valley and Ridge, and Piedmont Upland sections. – See more at: http://www.encyclopediaofalabama.org/article/h-1549
Now, What happened Geologically?
Into the deep dark geological cave I go, where the dark secrets are kept. I see 2 glistening eyes staring back at me!!!  Now I must wrestle this 800 pound wild boar hog into a tiny cage for a brief period of time before my brain shorts out.
>    The Alabama Coastal Plain is part of what is called the “Mississippi Embayment”.  The embayment goes a far north as the Ohio River at Cairo, Illinois.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mississippi_embayment

>    The Embayment’s complex origins include the New Madrid Fault, plate tectonics, the Appalachian and the Ouachita Mountains,  and in diamond-bearing kimberlite pipes in Arkansas, just to name a few.  I just love a mystery story.
>    With the help from Jim Lacefield’s book, “Lost Worlds in Alabama Rocks”, I will attempt to briefly summarize the facts.
–    “Seaward dipping stack of strata that were built up starting in the late Cretaceous Period.”
–    “90 million years of erosion.”
>    What we see on the Geologic Map of Alabama is the layered retreat of the Waters of the Gulf of Mexico.  In other words, as the water retreated, we are seeing the “Rings on a Bathtub”.  [Yes, there are geologic explanations for all of this, but as I stated above “KISS =Keep it Simple Stupid”]  {My apology to my geologic breatheren who have spent a life time of untangling this complex issue = “Well Done!”}  R
–    With down-warping of the rocks into the Gulf of Mexico, are we looking at some future Mountain Range?
?    Humor:  For those of you that are convinced that “Climate Change” is real and that geology repeats itself.  Now is the time to buy your beach front property.  Check out the Alabama Coastal Plain Road Map.  The norther limits extend from Phoenix City westward and northward through or near Opelika, Auburn, Calera, Tuscaloosa, and into Franklin County.
—–    I’m pretty sure that by now Dr. Doug Jones is ready to crawl out of his grave and that Dr. Jim Lacefield is beating his head on his desk.  To those and many others —– THANKS!
