January 29, 2017 Weekly Geology Guess, The Yellowstone Hot Spot.

Greetings from the Bluff Park Back Porch, way up yonder on Shades Mountain (1,109′) in Alabama:

We will now venture into the Yellowstone Volcanic Caldera, compliments of my Brother-in-Law, Dale.

I have chosen a different method of presentation, hopefully simpler for these complex subjects.  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

“The Yellowstone Caldera is the volcaniccaldera and supervolcano located in Yellowstone National Park in the United States, sometimes referred to as the Yellowstone Supervolcano. The caldera and most of the park are located in the northwest orner of Wyoming. The major features of the caldera measure about 34 by 45 miles (55 by 72 km).[4]

This is due to the North American Continental Plate moving from East to West.  The Hot Spot stays relatively stationary.  Similar to the Hawaiian Islands.

(This ash can be as fine as talcum powder.  The ash consists of volcanic glass with jagged, razor sharp edges = Not good for lungs or car engines.)
