February Weekly Geology Guess = Icelandic Plate Tectonics

February 18, 2017
Greetings from the Bluff Park Back Porch, way up yonder on Shades Mountain (1,109′) in Alabama:

>    Local Geologic News, Friday, February 17, 2017.  “SMALL QUAKE LAST NIGHT: The USGS reports a M2.6 earthquake last night at 11:26p CT west of Oak Grove and east of Windham Springs, where Tuscaloosa, Jefferson, and Walker Counties come together. I would imagine most slept right through it.”  ABC3340

0.93 miles deep or around 5.000 feet deep.  “Felt slightly by some people. No damage to buildings.”  Wikipedia

*****  It is all Iceland’s Fault!  R

We will now venture into the realm of Plate Tectonics (old Continental Drift) and Iceland

>    There is a lot of material with this subject.

Continental drift is the movement of the Earth’s continents relative to each other, thus appearing to “drift” across the ocean bed.[2]

“The geology of Iceland is unique and of particular interest to geologists. Iceland lies on the divergent boundary between the Eurasian plate and the North American plate. It also lies above a hotspot, the Iceland plume, which is believed to have caused the formation of Iceland itself, the island first appearing over the ocean surface about 16 to 18 million years ago.[1][2] The result is an island characterised by repeated volcanism and geothermal phenomena such as geysers.”  Wikipedia

Error from Last Week = Correction.  “Renewable sourcesgeothermal and hydropower—provide effectively all of Iceland’s electricity[135] and around 85% of the nation’s total primary energy consumption,[136] with most of the remainder consisting of imported oil products used in transportation and in the fishing fleet.[137][138]” Wikipedia

Next week, I will dive on into “Plate Tectonics”.  Where geologists fear to tread, especially old ones that grew up with geosynclines.

Enjoy the adventure!

Thanks,

R
