March 5, 2017 Weekly Geology Guest, Earthquakes

March 4, 2017
Greetings from the Bluff Park Back Porch, way up yonder on Shades Mountain (1,109′) in Alabama:

We will now dive into the realm of Earthquakes related to Plate Tectonics.

“Plate tectonics (from the Late Latin tectonicus, from the Greek: τεκτονικός “pertaining to building”)[1] is a scientific theory describing the large-scale motion of 7 large plates and the movements of a larger number of smaller plates of the Earth‘s lithosphere, over the last hundreds of millions of years.”

Where ever these plates collide and pulled apart there are earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis.

Detailed map showing the tectonic plates with their movement vectors.

List of US Earthquakes

Alabama did make the list with a 4.6 in 2003.

Earthquake House of Horrors:  After an earthquake, which usually has little or no warning, usually a major disaster is in the making,  See Haiti.  Numerous victims are killed or trapped, all utilities and governmental support is usually gone or late in getting to the site.  Numerous aftershocks.  Lost or missing family and loved ones.  No place to stay or no shelter.  Refugees. No food, water, or sanitation.  Hunger and disease.  Rebuilding takes years if not decades.

>    Give to the Red Cross or your charitable agency to assist these devastated people.

Attached pictures are from earthquake sites from around the world.

Next week, I will dive on into volcanoes that are caused by plate tectonics.
